How can i free up space on my XPs hard drive and make it faster?

-My windows XP has been running VERY slowly the last couple months. everything seems like it takes forever to do. it is so slow, my high speed internet sometimes feels like it is dial up instead and my email take a little while to load as well. I have the latest and most up to date virus software (Norton Anti virus 2011). besides deleting unnecessary pictures, music, and videos, what other file types can I safely and permanently delete to free up space ? Also, what else could I possibly do to speed up my whole computer in general ??wohh...

Just go to c drive properties, click Disc cleanup, be patient,

then click the more options tab on the top, click on the third clean up (system restore),

This will clean maximum space. click ok. Come out from it .

Then go to Disc clean up again, now on the first tab, check recycle bin and temporary internet files, and uncheck others, click ok. restart.

Use a light antivirus, delete unnecessary files from my documents and unnecessary icons from desktop.

Make sure you have minimum of 15-20gb of free space in C: drive so that the OS remains healthy and speady.
A couple of ways that I know how to speed up your computer. Treesize and Ccleaner. You can find both of those on google. Treesize will tell you what on your computer is taking up the most space and you can use Ccleaner to delete System Restore points. Make sure you don't delete any system files though. Hard drive: Defragment, run CCleaner, run a Spyware scan (Spybot Search & Destroy, etc.)



also, go to task manager to see what you have running. if your physical memory % is always high, you might need more/new RAM. If your CPU Usage % is high, you might need a new CPU.

there are many things you could do, but to list them all would be insane. I think those are the main important points though.
get Ubuntu/Linux I've had it for 5 years and its still as fast as the day I got it is a bit different than Windows but you don't need an antivirus ( it doesn't get viruses unless you install them yourself) and it doesn't slow down because it has a better file system then Windows (no defragmenting needed) and my computer boots up in less than a minute (about 30 seconds)
