-What is the safest thing for me to buy that I can save all my photos and videos too? I've got lots and lots of pictures and videos and I never ever want to lose them, I've got them all on my laptop at the minute and there not backed up, I'm scared that one day my laptop will break and I will lose everything. What can I do to ensure that I never lose these things. I'm not keen on uploading them to a website for them to be kept online, I was thinking maybe an external hard drive but they can break too. Thanks if you can help xThe safest way? Put them on DVDs or CDs.
Discs provided they are kept in their boxes and treated with respect will certainly out last you.
A disc is not affected by water, electrical interference or magnetism.
The only thing that will destroy them is fire or being physically broken.
Other than that it's estimated they will last between 70 and a 100 years.
A figure of 400 years has even been suggested. However seeing that they have only been around for about 15 years or so those figures haven't been quite proved yet!
A good quality DVD should be good for several years, maybe decades. Make two or three copies and keep them different places.
For photos, you can print them in black-and-white using carbon-based toner (laserjet I think) on low-acid archival paper, which should be good for hundreds of years.
Id say your best option is an external hard drive. You can find them at best buy. If you are responsible then you will not have to worry about the hard drive breaking. Hope that helped
